Most students will follow the new AQA combined science GCSE courses which covers the National Curriculum requirements and provides a sound scientific grounding in all three science disciplines. Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics are studied and assessed separately at the end of Year 11. Each science discipline is assessed in two examinations which are 1 hour and 15 minutes in duration and students will be awarded two identical GCSE grades. There is no controlled assessment or coursework, but students will be assessed on their practical knowledge and skills through specially designed questions on the exam papers. Students will therefore need knowledge and experience of a prescribed number of practicals set by the board. Students will be placed in a higher or foundation set according to their ability.
